Due to the combined efforts of the National Surface Treatment Center, the Sherwin-
Williams Company, and some well-respected LED flashlight manufacturers, exciting
new products have been developed  that will provide for efficient and effective visual
inspection of epoxy coatings for critical wet-surface marine or industrial applications.
Flashlights Unlimited joined forces with premium-quality flashlight makers to design,
develop, and market these remarkable new special-purpose inspection instruments.

Sherwin-Williams Industrial & Marine Coatings offers the new Duraplate^® UHS epoxy
coatings, with blue fluorescing Optically Active Pigment for visual integrity inspection.
When inspecting a fluorescent base coat, any pinholes or holidays will appear black
within the blue fluorescent coating.  When inspecting a non-fluorescent top coat over
a fluorescent base coat, pinholes and holidays will fluoresce a bright blue color within
the otherwise non-luminous finish coating.  Viewing with low-cost yellow filter glasses
blocks the reflected purple glare from the light source, and dramatically improves the
contrast during visual  inspections of coating integrity.  The minimal capital costs, low
operating expenses, and outstanding area coverage efficiencies of fluorescent visual
inspection make this a desirable alternative to other coating integrity testing methods.

Sherwin-Williams offers several different OAP coatings, with blue or pale gold finish
colors, and all of these work excellently with the same fluorescent inspection method.
Your Sherwin-Williams representative  can assist you with selecting the best combi-
nation of primers and topcoats  for your particular marine or wet-surface application.
Other respected coatings manufacturers  are also developing  new products for this
emerging technology.  And we expect that additional applications will arise for which
fluorescent visual inspections that have been conventionally accomplished with ultra-
violet light sources can be adjusted  to work with  less hazardous violet wavelengths.

The latest generation of LED inspection lights provide narrow-bandwidth output that
peaks near the far  violet  end of the visible light spectrum.  This  violet  light is much
safer for the eyes and skin  than conventional ultraviolet fluorescence sources, and it
can reduce the risk of eventual vision injury with frequent or long-term use of the light.
The 405nm and 410nm peak wavelengths of our Deep Purple series flashlights and
lanterns are above  the 400nm  ultraviolet  boundary,  providing optimum user safety.
Our FU-405 series flashlights  and XE-405 series lanterns  are designed to surpass
the radiometric and safety  requirements of the  ASTM E2501 light source standard.

Our amber lens (yellow) filter glasses will enhance the contrast of visual inspections,
and also provide additional vision safety.  Both styles will block  99.9% of both UVA
and UVB radiation, and provide protection even against  older and more hazardous
ultraviolet  inspection light sources.  They are constructed of durable polycarbonate,
and meet the velocity requirements of ANSI Z87.1 and CE EN166 safety standards.
Because we believe your glasses should be protected when they are not in use, we
now include a very nice black micro-fiber draw-string carrying pouch with every pair.
Our sport style glasses are compact, comfortable, and look really great.  Our larger
wrap-around style glasses are designed to fit over most  prescription lens eyewear.
Both of our models have been approved by the National Surface Treatment Center
for this application, yielding both enhanced safety and appropriate visual bandpass.

Some customers have asked for fluorescent marking pens that could be used to tag
problem areas during inspections.  We now offer the perfect solution, our convenient
retractable chisel-point highlighter with a handy plastic pocket clip.  The non-toxic ink
fluoresces a bright yellow color under our Deep Purple inspection lamps, and can be
removed easily from most non-porous surfaces with just a damp cloth or paper towel.
These pens are great for temporary fluorescent markings.  ASTM D-4236 compliant.

     RS-405D Deep Purple Demonstration Light    

Some of our customers have asked for a small low-cost flashlight that can be used to
demonstrate the OAP coatings inspection procedures.  And we have answered, with
our new RS-405D demonstration light.  Although it is not powerful enough to be prac-
tical for use in actual field inspections of significant size, this handy little flashlight will
deliver the same narrow-spectrum beam qualities as our larger Deep Purple models.
It is perfect for demonstration of the inspection processes, and its small size and light
weight make it easy to carry in the pocket or purse.  A common 9V alkaline transistor
radio battery powers it for hours of use, and can be quickly replaced without any tools.
And because inspections are best made in dark areas, this light also provides a pure
white beam that is bright enough to help you safely get around in the darkness.  A tiny
slide switch lets you select the desired beam color, purple for OAP demonstration, or

     XE-405H Deep Purple High Performance Rechargeable Lantern    

For inspection of larger surface areas, or when a longer beam throw is required, the
new Xenopus Electronix 405H lantern is the ultimate solution.  This high-power hand-
held unit has six 405nm high-flux emitters, driven by sophisticated regulation circuitry,
powered by long-life Nickel-Metal Hydride rechargeable batteries. The broad cover-
age area of this large format lantern  allows expansive surfaces, such as vessel hulls
or fluid tanks or bridge members, to be thoroughly inspected with remarkable speed
and unparalleled ease.  Designed exclusively for Flashlights Unlimited, this new light
source is even more versatile and productive  than our prior industry-leading models.

A host of excellent new features, and the latest technology enhancements, have been
incorporated in this powerful tool.  Six Helixeon 405nm emitters, each with an integral
focusing lens, provide an extremely smooth and concentrated beam to reduce errors
during the inspection process.  An electronic pushbutton trigger switch lets you select
full power to deliver the maximum beam range and intensity, or select reduced power
for increased runtime per charge (over eight hours!).  A third switch position activates
a powerful Cree 3-Watt neutral white LED with a sophisticated imported diffuser lens.
The white beam helps you easily navigate in dark areas without carrying a secondary
flashlight, and also provides for effective conventional visual inspection when needed.

However, its extraordinary multimode optical system is only a part of the story behind

Nickel-Metal Hydride tool batteries.  The XE-405H system includes two of these high-
performance batteries, plus a separate rapid battery charger unit. One battery can be

And the recycle time for the charger is less than the full-power run time for the lantern,
so the lantern can be operated continuously over extended periods, just by swapping
the two supplied batteries between the lantern and the charger.  And the system also
includes a universal-voltage AC-to-DC converter module, allowing corded operation.
An integrated LED battery power meter lets you check the charge status of the lantern.
This versatile and efficient power configuration makes the new XE-405H dramatically
more productive than any of our previous large-format lantern products, and allows full

Please note that the effective beam ranges indicated for these flashlights are rough
estimates, and based upon use in a totally dark area.  Any substantial ambient light
will dramatically reduce the range and usefulness of fluorescent inspection methods.
Results also vary with atmospheric conditions  (moisture, particulate size & density).
Also note that regardless of beam throw, an inspector may not be able to detect tiny
pinhole defects at significant distances without some means of vision enhancement.

Depending upon specific details of the individual applications, such as surface areas
and shape complexities, it may be appropriate to employ both hand torches (for tight
corners and angular shapes) and lanterns (for rapid coverage of large surface areas).

High Performance Lantern - Our anxiously awaited XE-405H high-performance
large-format inspection lanterns will become available soon, beginning in June.
Like our earlier XE-405M multimode lanterns, this new series offers two beam
intensity levels, as well as a powerful white beam for dark-area navigation and
conventional visual inspections.  But its new high-performance interchangeable
battery system allows the lantern to be operated continuously, just by swapping
battery packs once every few hours, making it our most productive system ever.
Small quantities will be available during June, reaching production levels in July.

the job done faster, and with fewer hassles.  We are proud to carry the wonderful

Demo Light - Available Now! Check out our exciting new product, a handy pocket-
sized flashlight designed for demonstration of the OAP inspection process.  Less
than four inches long, and weighing in at just three ounces with its battery, this little
light uses two 405nm narrow-bandwidth spot-beam LEDs for OAP demonstration,
and also provides two bright white LEDs for navigating in dark areas.  A miniature
switch toggles between the two beam colors, and a small rotary thumb-wheel acts
as the on/off switch and provides continuously adjustable brightness for the active
beam color.  The simple but effective driver circuit delivers extraordinary run times
from an ordinary nine volt transistor radio battery (heavy duty or alkaline or lithium).
Based on the venerable Rigel Systems Mini flashlight, this exceptional instrument
is priced under $40, making it affordable for a whole team of field representatives.

International Power Adapters!  The rechargeable version of our new FU-405 flash-
light includes an ungrounded, non-polarized AC power cord for the battery charger.
The plug fits most 120VAC outlets in the USA, Canada, and Japan.  However, the
battery charger itself can operate from either 120VAC/60Hz or 240VAC/50Hz line
power sources.  We now offer inexpensive adapter plugs, so that you can plug the
lithium ion battery charger into AC power outlets across most of the globe.  Check

These adapters can also be used with earlier series XE-405M multimode lanterns.

RoHS Certification!  The battery operated version of our new FU-405 flashlight is now
certified to be fully RoHS compliant.  The FU-405B flashlights can now be exported to
the EU community without concerns about unauthorized hazardous substances.  Con-

Our New Lantern!  We are very pleased to announce the development of our most
versatile inspection lantern ever, the super new XE-405M Deep Purple MultiMode
model.  Designed specifically for fluorescent coatings inspection, this remarkable
instrument utilizes the latest technologies  to deliver both the power and the beam
quality you need for large area inspections.  An array of helpful features, including
a bright white 3-Watt LED  for conventional lighting, an ultra-fast smart charger for
the reliable SLA battery, and dual brightness levels for the purple beam, make this
lantern the most effective and practical solution available for fluorescent inspection
tasks. The new XE-405M is available in both lantern only and full kit configurations.

Lantern Battery Replacements  -  Both of the following rechargeable lantern models
use the exact same 6V (6-Volt) 3AH (3-AmpHour) SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) battery:
XE-405S - Deep Purple Standard (Generation I, yellow body with eighty tiny LEDs)
XE-405M - Deep Purple MultiMode (Generation III, orange body with 7 large LEDs)
Replacements for this specialty battery size have been discontinued by the makers
of the bodies for our earlier large-format inspection lanterns (Vector Manufacturing,
and later Black & Decker). Although a generic 6V 3AH SLA battery is available, its
size is not compatible with our lanterns. We have developed a special replacement
battery that incorporates the latest Nickel Metal Hydride chemistry. The new battery
is differently shaped,  but it will fit perfectly in all of our  XE-405S (Generation I)  and
XE-405M (Generation III) lantern models.  You can purchase the new custom-made
battery from us (and install it yourself), or send in your lantern for a battery exchange
when needed  (the latter is suggested for later XE-405M MultiMode lanterns, due to
the complexities of disassembly and reassembly).  Also note that the limited edition
XE-405P model (Generation II, yellow body with 7 large LEDs) has a custom lithium
ion battery pack, please contact us regarding battery replacement for those lanterns.

Discontinued Products  -  Vector Manufacturing, makers of the lantern bodies that
were used in our  XE-410S (80-LED)  and  XE-405P (7-LED high-flux)  inspection
lanterns, discontinued production of their Tuff-Brite series lanterns.  As a result, we
had to redesign our large format lantern, and have discontinued the earlier models.
Also please note that Elcometer has discontinued production of the Fluorescenator
SureFire 260 hand torch, so that model has also become unavailable for purchase.
The special Deep Purple version of the compact, low-cost INOVA X5 flashlight has
also been discontinued by the factory.  It was a fine hand torch for demonstration of
the OAP coating inspection procedure, but our newer FU-405 series flashlights are
far more effective for actual field use, thanks to much brighter and smoother beams.
Black & Decker manufactured the orange & black trigger-grip bodies for our series
XE-405M multimode lanterns.  Unfortunately, they have discontinued the product line,
so we are unable to make any more XE-405M lanterns.  However, our amazing new
series XE-405H high performance lanterns offer many of the same advantages, but
with an entirely new battery power system that facilitates around-the-clock operation.

Our standard surface freight shipping charges are applied, and are very reasonable.
Freight upcharge payments may be required for deliveries outside the of continental
United States (including Alaska, Hawaii, APO or FPO, and international addresses),
or when purchasing 2 or more lanterns, or large numbers of X5 lights or accessories.
The typical order turnaround interval is 1 to 2 business days, depending on products.
If the quantity required exceeds available stock, lead time will be one to three weeks.

Product Warranties:
All of our Deep Purple flashlight and lantern products have a limited warranty period of
at least one year from the date of delivery. However, because the useful lifespan of any
rechargeable battery will be dependent upon adherence to appropriate operation and
maintenance procedures, all rechargeable batteries are warranted for just ninety days.
Regardless of the rechargeable battery technology (whether lithium ion or sealed lead
acid type), you should fully charge each rechargeable battery at least once every six to
eight weeks. Failure to recharge regularly will result in premature decline of the battery.
Never attempt to recharge disposable primary batteries (such as type CR123A lithium
or 9V alkaline batteries), fire or explosion may result and cause serious injury or death.
